The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease . Lamentations 3: 22 Oh Almighty God, how great and tender your mercies are with your children, you do not delight in afflicting or mourning us, you have delayed the affliction while the honor of your name and the safety of your children allow it, but when your people humble, your heart Oh God, melts in compassion. You use our enemies to correct our evils because you prefer that our hearts be heavy under the adversity that neglected under prosperity. The soul of godly men has been passed through fire and through the most acute sufferings, these holy men who now shine like lights in heaven were trodden down as dung on earth. But, why God being so compassionate has approached us by his providences on paths of suffering? (1.) In severe suffering, God manifests His glory, His power in support, escape and liberation. (2.) Through suffering, corruption is mortified and sincerity is demonstrated with joy and satisfaction in our hearts. Many doubts and fears are removed. (3.) Sufferings free the church from the hypocrites. Affliction is a furnace to separate the scum from pure gold. (4.) Suffering makes us appreciate the family of God. The times of suffering are times of reconciliation and greater affection between one another. (5.) By suffering we wake up to our duties and we are taught to pray more frequently and fervently. Ah, what drowsiness and formality creep in times of prosperity! Therefore, "The constant love of the LORD never ceases; His mercies never come to end " Adapted from Puritan John Flavel.
